Isolation & Quarantine Protocols For Vaccinated And Unvaccinated Students 

What is the difference between isolation and quarantine?

• Quarantine is when you might have been exposed to the virus.
• Isolation is when you have been infected with the virus, even if you don’t have symptoms.

What are the current protocols for vaccinated and unvaccinated students who test positive? 

No matter the vaccination status of a student, if a child tests positive for Covid via a PCR, rapid antigen, or a rapid home test, they must remain out of school and in isolation for at least 5 days. Students may then return to school as long as symptoms have improved. In alignment with the State, City and Norwalk Health Department, the isolation period has been decreased from 10 days to 5 if no symptoms are present. This change follows updated guidelines recently announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no testing out of an isolation for a positive Covid case.  

When will my child have to do a household quarentine?

• If a student is fully vaccinated, they do not need to quarantine if another member of the household is Covid-19 positive.
• If a student is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and exposed to a positive Covid-19 case in the home:
• They will quarantine for 5 days (Day 0 being the date of the last contact) and return on Day 6 if they have no symptoms and were able to fully separate from the positive Covid-19 case in the home.
• If the student is unable to separate from the positive Covid-19 case in the home, it will be 10 days, returning on Day 11 if no symptoms.  

There is no option to test out of this quarantine. 

Adhering to mask-wearing from Day 6 - Day 10, as well as other mitigating measures like social distancing and hand washing, will also decrease the spread of Covid-19.

Covid Testing & Return To School 

How do I know when my child can return to school?

• If your child has symptoms or tests positive for Covid, they will need to isolate for at least 5 days. Day 0 is your child’s first day of symptoms or the date that the positive test was taken. Your child will need to isolate for days 1-5 and may return to school on day six if they have no symptoms. Your child must also be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines.

Please note: If your child has tested positive for Covid on or before January 12, 2022, they may return to school on January 18, 2022, as long as symptoms have improved and they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. 

How do school nurses determine whether a child should be sent home from school? 

• When a student shows signs of illness at school, NPS school nurses evaluate the child based on the Department of Public Health Addendum 5 from the state of Connecticut.  

If my child is sent home from school for illness, what is required for them to return to school? 

• If a child is sent home, they will not be able to return to school ​for 5 days unless a doctor's note with an alternate diagnosis is provided to the school, or a negative Covid test is received.  If your child tests positive, a 5-day isolation period is required no matter what the student’s vaccination status is.

What types of Covid tests are accepted by NPS? 

• The types of tests accepted for students are PCR, rapid antigen, or a rapid home test. If using a home test, NPS requires a photo of the test be provided to your child’s school, with confirmation of student’s name and date, as well as a visible parent/guardian signature, on a piece of paper, next to the test.  

Will NPS provide families with at-home Covid tests? 

• Covid tests provided by the state are available when a child is sent home sick so that a parent can test at home.  

Learning - If Your Child Has Tested Positive For Covid 

What plans will be put in place to support student learning if a child needs to isolate? 

• If a child needs to isolate because of a confirmed Covid case, the Curriculum & Instruction department will put a plan together for the child to receive services.  
• The department requires 24 business hours to develop and implement the learning plan. A member of the NPS staff will contact the parent or guardian to set up a schedule to help support your child during the isolation. 

What is the format of learning during isolation?  

• Students in isolation will be assigned to a virtual teacher for 5 days. The teacher will not be your child's classroom teacher. These teachers will work with the classroom teacher and offer asynchronous and synchronous support for students while in isolation. 

 How are services provided for students with disabilities?  

• Students with disabilities will be provided with service hours. Additional hours for related services will be provided in addition to the general educational model.

Remote Learning

Why is NPS not offering remote learning in 2021-22?

• Remote learning is not an option in Connecticut, as those days would not count towards the State’s legal requirement of 180 instructional days. 

Homebound Learning Eligibility 

How can I get homebound instruction for my child?  

• The Connecticut State Department of Education has issued new regulations, resulting in significant changes to homebound instruction. Homebound instruction shall be provided only for a "verified medical reason which may include mental health issues."  
• In order to determine whether a child has a "verified medical reason," when homebound instruction is being considered, the child's treating physician must provide a written statement to the Board of Education/Norwalk Public Schools, on the district's Request for Homebound Instruction form.

In-School Contact Tracing 

Will NPS continue to conduct in-school contact tracing for all students? 

• Due to the rising number of Covid cases, NPS nurses and staff are no longer able to effectively conduct contact tracing for students. As a result, contact tracing for all grade levels will be paused, so our team can focus on informing and supporting families with confirmed positive cases.
• This decision was made in consultation with the Norwalk Health Department, aligns with recent guidance on contact tracing from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and has been adopted by many surrounding districts.

In-School Testing For Students 

Does NPS offer weekly in-school testing for students? 

• In collaboration with Progressive Diagnostics, NPS now offers PCR testing for all NPS students. Testing occurs once a week at all schools across the district for students not exhibiting any Covid-related symptoms, with parental consent. The test is a non-invasive swabbing of the lower nostrils (no “brain tickling”) and takes only a few seconds to collect. Results will be available to parents within 24 hours via a HIPAA compliant online portal.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre aislamiento y cuarentena?

• La cuarentena es cuando puede haber estado expuesto al virus.
• El aislamiento es cuando ha sido infectado con el virus, incluso aunque no presente síntomas.

¿Cuáles son los protocolos actuales para estudiantes vacunados y no vacunados que dan positivo en la prueba?

• Independientemente del estado de vacunación de un estudiante, si un niño da positivo de COVID a través de una prueba de PCR, de antígeno rápido o una prueba rápida en el hogar, debe permanecer sin ir a la escuela y aislarse por lo menos 5 días. Los estudiantes pueden regresar a la escuela siempre y cuando los síntomas hayan mejorado. En consonancia con el Estado, la Ciudad y el Departamento de Salud de Norwalk, el período de aislamiento se ha reducido de 10 a 5 días si no se presentan síntomas. Este cambio sigue las pautas actualizadas que anunciaron recientemente los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC). No hay pruebas para finalizar o reducir el aislamiento en un caso de COVID positivo.

Prueba De COVID Y Regreso A La Escuela

¿Cómo sé cuándo mi hijo puede regresar a la escuela?

• Si su hijo tiene síntomas o da positivo en la prueba de Covid, tiene que aislarse por lo menos 5 días. El día 0 es el primer día de síntomas de su estudiante, o la fecha en que se tomó la prueba positiva. Si usa una prueba casera, NPS requiere que se proporcione una foto de la prueba a la escuela de su hijo, con la confirmación de la fecha y del nombre del estudiante, así como una firma visible del padre/tutor, en una hoja de papel, al lado de la prueba.

¿NPS proporcionará a las familias pruebas caseras de COVID?

Aprendizaje: Si Su Hijo Ha Dado Positivo Por Covid

• Si un niño necesita aislarse debido a un caso confirmado de Covid, el departamento de Plan de Estudios e Instrucción elaborará un plan para que el niño reciba los servicios.
• El departamento requiere 24 horas hábiles para desarrollar e implementar el plan de aprendizaje. Un miembro del personal de NPS se comunicará con el padre/tutor para establecer un horario para ayudar a apoyar a su hijo durante el período de aislamiento.

¿Cuál es el formato de aprendizaje durante el período de aislamiento?

• Los estudiantes en aislamiento serán asignados a un maestro virtual durante 5 días. El maestro no será el maestro de la clase de su hijo. Estos maestros trabajarán con el maestro del aula y ofrecerán apoyo asincrónico y sincrónico a los estudiantes mientras estén en aislamiento.

¿Cómo se brindan los servicios a los estudiantes con discapacidades?

• Se proporcionarán horas de servicio a los estudiantes con discapacidades. Se proporcionarán horas adicionales para servicios relacionados además del modelo educativo general.

Aprendizaje Remoto

¿Por qué NPS no ofrece aprendizaje remoto en 2021-22?

• El aprendizaje remoto no es una opción en Connecticut, ya que esos días no cuentan para el requisito legal del estado de 180 días de instrucción.

Rastreo De Contactos En La Escuela

• Debido al creciente número de casos de COVID, los enfermeros y el personal de NPS ya no pueden realizar de manera efectiva el rastreo de contactos para los estudiantes. Pruebas En La Escuela Para Estudiantes

¿Ofrece NPS pruebas semanales en las escuelas para estudiantes?

• En colaboración con Progressive Diagnostics, NPS ahora ofrece pruebas de PCR para todos los estudiantes de NPS. Las pruebas se realizan una vez a la semana en todas las escuelas del distrito para los estudiantes que no presentan ningún síntoma relacionado con COVID, con el consentimiento de los padres. La prueba consiste en un frotis no invasivo de las fosas nasales inferiores (sin "cosquilleos cerebrales") y toma solo unos segundos para recolectar. Los resultados estarán disponibles para los padres dentro de las 24 horas a través de un portal en línea compatible con HIPAA.
