UPDATE ON INCIDENT AT NHS & P-TECH NORWALK - 12/08/2021

On Wednesday December 08, 2021 at approximately 1:35 pm, the Norwalk Police Department communications center received a threats notification against Norwalk High School.

Police responded, secured the facility and placed the school in lock down. The building was searched and cleared, at which point students were dismissed.  As a precautionary measure, Naramake Elementary School and Nathan Hale Middle School were both placed into lock out.

This remains an ongoing investigation and the Norwalk Police has enlisted the assistance of the FBI to determine the source of the threat, which is believed to be related to last week’s similar incident.

“The incident was handled calmly and efficiently thanks to the cooperation of school staff and students. The increase in police presence will continue,” said Chief Thomas Kulhawik.

“I thank the men and women of the Norwalk Police Department for responding and investigating every incident. Please know we are going to utilize all available resources, including State and Federal law enforcement agencies, to determine the origins of these threats. This behavior is dangerous and it will not be tolerated,” said Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling. “I am thankful these incidents have been hoaxes, but I understand the stress, anxiety, and potential trauma this is causing our students, staff, families, and community. Our Community Services Department is working closely with the Norwalk Public Schools to ensure appropriate support systems are in place.”

“Our Technology team is working closely with the Norwalk Police Department and FBI to support their investigation. We hope this work leads to identifying the individual responsible for this chain of events,” said Dr. Alexandra Estrella, Superintendent, Norwalk Public Schools. “We will continue to have our district crisis team available to support our students and staff. This includes counselors, social workers and psychologists, as well as staff from Mid-Fairfield Child Guidance and Family & Children’s Agency.”
