March is coming in like a lion with some fun and informative events throughout the district. Norwalk Public Schools will celebrate its second district wide event to celebrate Black Heritage and History (postponed from Feb. 28), and West Rocks Middle School will audiences to The Cave of Wonders in its production of “Aladdin Jr.”

The Curriculum and Schools department will host several workshops to teach parents more about Scientific Research-Based Interventions and the learning that takes place in our pre-K and kindergarten classrooms. NPS Workforce Development will host its first Career Fair at Norwalk High School for high school students and our families.

Black Heritage & History Festival

Thursday, March 9 from 6-8 p.m.

Brien McMahon High School, 300 Highland Ave. in Norwalk

Norwalk Public Schools will host its second district wide celebration, the Black History & Heritage Festival, on Thursday, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brien McMahon High School. The theme of the event is Using Our Voices: A Journey Through Time.

Come see performances and presentations by our students that highlight the incredible and inspiring contributions made by Black Americans from the abolitionist movement to the Harlem Renaissance through the Civil Rights era and leading to the Black Lives Matter movement.

What Is SRBI?

Thursday, March 16 from 6-7 p.m.

NPS Family Center, 1 Park St. in Norwalk

The SRBI (Scientific Research-Based Intervention) Department will host a parent workshop on Tuesday, March 7. Families are invited to learn more about how NPS supports students with intervention tools for reading and math.

They will go over strategies to use at home to encourage good learning habits. Families will also learn more about research-based interventions and the schools’ daily WIN (What I Need) blocks scheduled to strengthen students’ individual needs outside of the general classroom in grades K-8.

Brien McMahon High School presents “Chicago”

Mitigating Bias Through an Intersectional Lens

The Equity Institute invites Norwalk families to explore this year’s equity trainings on mitigating bias. 

In the first virtual workshop, Norwalk families will learn to create understanding across lived experiences and perspectives by focusing on the complexities of implicit bias.

Sessions will be held in both English and Spanish at the same time. The Equity Institute encourages families to participate in the virtual sessions using a tablet or computer so it’s easier to connect and share with each other.
