The Connecticut Department of Agriculture has awarded Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy the CT Grown 4 CT Kids Grant to help the school further develop and enhance its farm-to-school program, Edible U.

Edible U will provide an opportunity for Ponus Ridge students to participate in a local food system from seed to plate. The program will bring students through each step of the food system by starting seeds, growing crops, harvesting food, learning to cook, and consuming fresh and nourishing meals. The project requires an indoor grow system for seed starting, gardening tools, and a mobile cooking cart.

“We believe this is a powerful approach to introduce local food system education to youth while simultaneously building a farm-to-school community,” said Lisa Lenskold, co-founder of Norwalk Grows. “Thanks to partnerships between Norwalk Public Schools, FoodCrops, Chartwells Dining and Norwalk Grows, we are able to foster a community that will continue to grow farm-to-school activities for students and the Ponus STEAM community.”

The state department of agriculture awarded 32 grants from the Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids Grant (CTG4CTK Grant), totaling $452,268. The program received 72 applications for grant funding. Eligible entities could apply for up to $24,999 in funding with no match required for projects that fit within four specified tracks.

Hayley Scheir, a FoodCorps service member working at Ponus Ridge, was instrumental in preparing the grant application.

“The learning community at Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy is excited to be the recipient of The CT Grown for CT Kids Recipient,” said Dr. Damon Lewis, principal of Ponus Ridge. “We want our students to be exposed to a wide range of skills, leadership activities, and the entire ‘seed to plate’ process. 

“Our staff has worked tirelessly to engage students in learning opportunities that will serve them currently and in the future. Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy is looking forward to continuing the partnership with Norwalk Grows, FoodCorps, Chartwell Dining, and of course, Norwalk Public Schools. We are appreciative of this opportunity."

The goal of the grant program is to increase the availability of local foods in child nutrition programs, allow educators to use hands-on educational techniques to teach students about nutrition and farm-to-school connections, sustain relationships with local farmers and producers, enrich the education experience of students, improve the health of children in the state and enhance the state’s economy.

“Response to the Connecticut Grown for Connecticut Kids Grant program has been tremendous and we are pleased to double the number of awardees this year with increased funding capacity,” said Agriculture Commissioner Bryan P. Hurlburt. “We are especially appreciative of the advisory committee members who participated in the review process to ensure these projects will have a meaningful and immediate impact on students’ access to fresh, nutritious CT Grown foods while providing interactive learning opportunities related to agriculture, nutrition, food and health.”
