Norwalk Public Schools launched My Sister’s Keeper to engage our female students of color in a similar initiative My Brother’s Keeper to address persistent opportunity gaps and ensure that all our young people can reach their full potential.
My Sister’s Keeper provides opportunities for young ladies in the district to find a sense of affiliation, community and self while empowering themselves and encouraging other girls like them. Mentors within the school buildings are available as members of a supportive village focused on the holistic success of each girl involved.
My Sister’s Keeper is open to middle and high school students and meets once a month. Each monthly meeting is designed based on student interest with the purpose of developing self-confidence, identity and connections.
At each meeting, leaders and mentors instill and reinforce the core values through team building activities, academic activities, social and emotional learning, and informational trips (i.e. theatre productions, camping, college tours, etc.).
