The social and emotional support available for our students in Norwalk Public Schools is extremely important, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading the charge to ensure every Norwalk student has access to school counselors, social workers and the city’s community partners is Jim Martinez, education administrator for counseling & social services, homebound instruction, and 504’s.

The Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) recently honored Martinez for his efforts to promote the importance of social and emotional learning for students, naming him the Latino Administrator of the Year 2022-2023 during the 19th annual National ALAS Education Summit from Oct. 5-7.

“I was obviously extremely honored and humbled, but the first thing I thought was how proud I am to be working here in Norwalk. How proud I am to have the opportunity to do this work here and to get the support in order to do it,” Martinez said.

The summit’s location in San Juan, Puerto Rico also had special meaning to Martinez because he accepted the award within “walking distance from where my parents grew up, met and got married,” he said. “For me, it has a very, very profound meaning that I’m being recognized for things that they taught me.”

The mission of ALAS is to provide leadership at the national level that assures every school in America effectively serves the educational needs of all students with an emphasis on Latino Youth by building capacity, promoting best practices and transforming educational institutions. 

The national organization also has 18 state affiliates including the Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (CALAS) of which Martinez is a member. 

As part of his work with CALAS, Martinez was one of 25 administrators chosen from across the country to attend a summit with the U.S. Department of Education in Washington D.C. over the summer. One of the topics discussed was how to increase the number of school administrators who are persons of color and bring that to the attention of the Department of Education and the Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

“Jim Martinez is deserving of this award,” said Norwalk Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alexandra Estrella. “In the wake of the pandemic, it was very important for our district to provide the necessary social and emotional supports to help our students transition back into school and achieve academic success. The great work of our school counselors, social workers and community partners reflects Jim’s incredible efforts to ensure our students social and emotional well-being.”

While honored to receive the award from ALAS, Martinez quickly pointed to Norwalk’s school counselors and social workers who are doing the heavy lifting in the schools to provide many of the social and emotional supports for students across the district. He oftens hears from people outside the district who are surprised by what Norwalk already has in place.

“It’s a big plug for us in Norwalk,” Martinez said. “I talk to districts everywhere, and it’s very unique that we have all these supports in place.”

Martinez also credits the collaboration and commitment between the city and the Board of Education to support Norwalk’s children and to let nothing come in the way of achieving that mission.

“It’s all the same vision,” Martinez said. “Everyone sees it that way here, and it’s been great.”

Jim Martinez: La Asociación de Administradores y Superintendentes Latinos (ALAS), Administrador latino del año 2022-2023

El apoyo socioemocional disponible para nuestros estudiantes en Escuelas Públicas de Norwalk es extremadamente importante, especialmente después de la pandemia de COVID-19. Jim Martinez, administrador de educación para asesoramiento y servicios sociales, instrucción en el hogar y planes 504, está encargado de garantizar que cada estudiante de Norwalk tenga acceso a consejeros escolares, trabajadores sociales y socios comunitarios de la ciudad.

 homenajeó recientemente a Martinez por sus esfuerzos para promover la importancia del aprendizaje socioemocional para los estudiantes, nombrándolo Administrador Latino del Año 2022-2023 durante la 19.ª Cumbre Anual de Educación Nacional de ALAS celebrada del 5 al 7 de octubre.

“Obviamente me sentí extremadamente honrado y agradecido, pero lo primero que pensé fue lo orgulloso que estoy de trabajar aquí en Norwalk. Qué orgulloso estoy de tener la oportunidad de hacer este trabajo aquí y de obtener el apoyo para hacerlo”, dijo Martinez.

La ubicación de la cumbre en San Juan, Puerto Rico también tuvo un significado especial para Martinez porque aceptó el premio a “una corta distancia a pie de donde crecieron, se conocieron y se casaron mis padres”, dijo. “Para mí, tiene un significado muy, muy profundo que me reconozcan por las cosas que ellos me enseñaron”.

La misión de ALAS es brindar liderazgo a nivel nacional que asegure que cada escuela en los Estados Unidos atienda de manera efectiva las necesidades educativas de todos los estudiantes con énfasis en la juventud latina mediante el desarrollo de capacidades, la promoción de las mejores prácticas y la transformación de las instituciones educativas. 

La organización nacional también tiene 18 afiliados estatales, incluida la Asociación de Administradores y Superintendentes Latinos de Connecticut (CALAS), de la cual Martinez es miembro. 

Como parte de su trabajo con CALAS, Martinez fue uno de los 25 administradores elegidos de todo el país para asistir a una cumbre con el Departamento de Educación de los EE. UU. en Washington DC durante el verano. Alexandra Estrella. “Después de la pandemia, era muy importante que nuestro distrito brindara los apoyos socioemocionales necesarios para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a hacer la transición de regreso a la escuela y lograr el éxito académico. El gran trabajo de nuestros consejeros escolares, trabajadores sociales y socios comunitarios refleja los increíbles esfuerzos de Jim para garantizar el bienestar socioemocional de nuestros estudiantes”.

Si bien se sintió honrado de recibir el premio de ALAS, Martinez señaló rápidamente a los consejeros escolares y trabajadores sociales de Norwalk que están haciendo el trabajo pesado en las escuelas para brindar muchos de los apoyos socioemocionales para los estudiantes en todo el distrito. A menudo escucha a personas fuera del distrito que están sorprendidas por lo que Norwalk ya tiene implementado.

“Es una gran propaganda para nosotros en Norwalk”, dijo Martinez. “Hablo con distritos de todas partes, y es muy singular que tengamos todos estos apoyos”.

Martinez también acredita la colaboración y el compromiso entre la ciudad y la Junta de Educación para apoyar a los niños de Norwalk y no permitir que nada se interponga en el camino para lograr esa misión.

“Todo es la misma visión”, dijo Martinez. “Todos lo ven de esa manera aquí, y ha sido genial”.
