On Oct. 4 and 5, scholars and mentors of My Brother’s Keeper attended the first Rites of Passage overnight trip to Camp Oneka in Tafton, Pennsylvania. 

During the two-day event, the young men participated in team building activities, wrote and shared personal reflections, led community circles, engaged in mindfulness, and learned effective communication strategies to support each other and complete tasks.

On the final morning, before sunrise, the group embarked on a mindfulness walk where scholars and mentors connected hand to shoulder and had to “have each other’s back” as part of the Rites of Passage concluding ceremony. They paid honor and respect to the ancestors and important figures of their lives by calling out the names of those who transitioned through the affirmation of “Ase,” which can mean “Right on!” or “Yes!” or “I’m with you!” or “Amen” or “May it be so.”

The young men who exhibited characteristics befitting the expectations of an MBK scholar received an MBK hoodie. Those who didn’t will have the opportunity to earn it through upcoming MBK events.

The mission of My Brother’s Keeper in Norwalk is to empower young men of color by providing opportunities to build strong relationships with peers and mentors, instilling core values, problem solving/critical thinking skills, and engaging in rites of passage program that will support social emotional development (sense of self), commitment to service and increased student achievement.

The vision of My Brother’s Keeper in Norwalk is for MBK scholars to obtain the fundamental skills needed to develop into future leaders in all areas of industry and utilize those skills to serve their communities, advocate/stand against injustice, and create innovation in order to be competitive in an ever evolving global society.

​​Los días 4 y 5 de octubre, los estudiantes y mentores de My Brother's Keeper asistieron al primer viaje de Rites of Passage.  Un viaje nocturno al campamento Oneka en Tafton, Pensilvania.

Durante el evento de dos días, los jóvenes participaron en actividades de equipos, escribieron y compartieron reflexiones personales, lideraron círculos comunitarios, se involucraron en atención plena y aprendieron estrategias de comunicación efectivas para apoyarse mutuamente y completar tareas.

En la última mañana, antes del amanecer, el grupo se embarcó en una caminata de atención plena donde los estudiantes y mentores se conectaron de la mano y tuvieron que "apoyarse el uno al otro" como parte de la ceremonia de clausura de Rites of Passage rindieron honor y respeto a los ancestros y figuras importantes de sus vidas llamando los nombres de aquellos que hicieron la transición a través de la afirmación de "Ase", que puede significar "¡Justo ahora!" ¡o si!" o "¡Estoy contigo!" o “Amén” o “Que así sea”.

Los jóvenes que exhibieron características acordes con las expectativas de un estudiante de MBK recibieron una sudadera con capucha de MBK. Aquellos que no lo hayan hecho tendrán la oportunidad de ganarlo a través de los próximos eventos de MBK.

La misión de My Brother's Keeper en Norwalk es empoderar a los jóvenes de color, brindándoles oportunidades para construir relaciones sólidas con compañeros y mentores, inculcando valores fundamentales, habilidades de resolución de problemas/pensamiento crítico y participando en un programa de ritos de iniciación que apoyará las relaciones sociales y emocionales (sentido de sí mismo), compromiso con el servicio y mayor rendimiento estudiantil.

La visión de My Brother's Keeper en Norwalk es que los académicos de MBK obtengan las habilidades fundamentales necesarias para convertirse en futuros líderes en todas las áreas de la industria y utilizar esas habilidades para servir a sus comunidades, abogar/oponerse a la injusticia y crear innovación para ser competitivos en una sociedad global en constante evolución.
