The leaves are changing. The temperatures are cooling, but things are heating up at Norwalk Public Schools. We again want to invite our families and staff to a wide variety of events occurring throughout the month of October. These events are open to all members of the NPS community.

The NPS Family Center will host six Family Workshops this month, and we’ll have more opportunities to learn about our middle school and high school programs for the 2023-2024 school year. We also continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a districtwide festival at the end of the month, and a performance of “La Gringa,” the iconic play by Carmen Rivera.

Middle School and High School Town Hall

Monday, Oct. 3 at 6-8 p.m.

Norwalk High School Auditorium, 23 Calvin Murphy Dr. in Norwalk

NPS will introduce the Middle School Choice programs and review the choice programs available at our four high schools. The Town Hall will also be available for streaming online via the Norwalk Public Schools YouTube page.

There will be two options to ask questions. Note cards will be provided to write down questions and submit them to the district. The cards will be collected following the Town Hall presentation and answered at random. If a question is not answered during the Town Hall, it will be added to the FAQ online.

We will also provide an opportunity for comments. Any person that wishes to comment can sign up at the beginning of the meeting and will have two minutes to speak.

Family Workshop: Referral to Special Education and PPT Process

The Office of Specialized Learning invites families to join the NPS Parent Ombudsperson who will discuss the process of referral to special education. Elements of the PPT process will also be explained.

Family Workshop: Understanding & Improving Youth Mental Health

Thursday, Oct. 6 at 5-6 p.m.

Mental health clinicians from Mid-Fairfield Community Care Center will discuss the following topics:

• Youth mental health
• How to look for signs and symptoms
• Tips and strategies to support your child
• Available community resources

Cavalcade of Bands

Saturday, Oct. 8 at 5-8 p.m.

NHS - Testa Field, 23 Calvin Murphy Dr. in Norwalk

The Norwalk High School Marching Band will host the 38th annual Cavalcade of Bands at Testa Field. Enjoy the NHS marching band’s 2022 field show “The Crow” as well as music from Brien McMahon High School and other local high school marching bands.

Concessions will be open and stop by the bake sale to support the NHS Marching Band. Be sure to say hello to NHS Marching Band alumni members who will gather for the traditional 50-yard line photo after the awards ceremony.

Norwalk elementary and middle school students will get in free. They must be accompanied by an adult. Regular admission costs apply for adults and other attendees.

“La Gringa”

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the NPS Multilingual Learner Education Department presents “La Gringa.”

La Gringa is a play about a young woman born in NYC who travels to Puerto Rico for the first time to meet her family and to discover her roots. Her misconceptions are transformed, and she learns that being Puerto Rican is a matter of heart and spirit!

The play will be performed in Spanish, but English captions will be provided. A limited number of tickets are available for FREE at the NPS Family Center, located at 1 Park St., or at your child’s school.

Family Workshop: Courage to Speak (Spanish)

Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10-11:30 a.m.

Ginger Katz, founder of the Courage to Speak Foundation, will lead the “Parenting Through the Drug Crisis and Beyond” workshop for parents. Margaret Watt, MPH, MA, prevention director at Positive Directions - The Center for Prevention & Counseling, will facilitate the discussion which will include the following topics.

• Understanding signs of drug use
• Effective communication strategies with youth on drugs
• Prevention and intervention strategies for teachers
• Teaching youth drug refusal skills
• Helping youth cope effectively with stress and emotions
• Marijuana’s influence on opioid abuse and much more

NPS lo invita - Eventos de octubre

Las hojas están cambiando. Las temperaturas se están enfriando, pero las cosas se están calentando en las Escuelas Públicas de Norwalk. Nuevamente queremos invitar a nuestras familias y al personal a una gran variedad de eventos que tendrán lugar durante el mes de octubre. Estos eventos están abiertos a todos los miembros de la comunidad de NPS.

El Centro Familiar de NPS organizará seis Talleres Familiares este mes, y tendremos más oportunidades para conocer sobre nuestros programas de la escuela media y secundaria para el año escolar 2023-2024. También seguimos celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con un festival en todo el distrito a finales del mes, y una representación de "La Gringa", la icónica obra de Carmen Rivera.

Ayuntamiento de la escuela media y secundaria

NPS presentará los programas de Elección de Escuela Media y revisará los programas de elección disponibles en nuestras cuatro escuelas secundarias. El Ayuntamiento también estará disponible para la transmisión en línea a través de la página de YouTube de las Escuelas Públicas de Norwalk.

Habrá dos opciones para hacer preguntas. Se proporcionarán tarjetas para anotar las preguntas y enviarlas al distrito. Las tarjetas se recogerán tras la presentación del Ayuntamiento y se responderán al azar. Si una pregunta no se responde durante el Ayuntamiento, se añadirá a las preguntas frecuentes en línea.

NHS - Testa Field, 23 Calvin Murphy Dr. en Norwalk

La Banda de Marcha de Norwalk High School será la anfitriona de la 38ª edición del Desfile de Bandas en Testa Field. Disfrute del espectáculo de campo "The Crow" de la banda de marcha de NHS de 2022, así como de la música de Brien McMahon High School y de otras bandas de marcha de escuelas secundarias locales.

“La Gringa”

Para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el Departamento de Educación de Estudiantes Multilingües de NPS presenta "La Gringa".

La Gringa es una obra de teatro sobre una mujer joven nacida en NYC que viaja a Puerto Rico por primera vez para conocer a su familia y descubrir sus raíces. Sus ideas equivocadas se transforman y aprende que ser puertorriqueño es una cuestión de corazón y espíritu.

La obra se representará en español, pero se proporcionarán subtítulos en inglés. Hay un número limitado de entradas GRATIS en el Centro Familiar de NPS, situado en 1 Park St., o en la escuela de su hijo.
