The 2022-2023 school year is underway, and Norwalk Public Schools wants to invite our families and staff to a wide variety of events occurring throughout the month of September. These events are open to all members of the NPS community.

The NPS Family Center will host three Family Workshops this month, and the district is co-hosting a screening of the documentary film, “Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER,” with the Norwalk Education Foundation to help our families learn more about the mental wellbeing of teenagers growing up in the digital age.

Family Workshop: Courage to Speak

Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10-11:30 a.m.

NPS Family Center, 1 Park St. in Norwalk

Ginger Katz, founder of the Courage to Speak Foundation, will lead the “Parenting Through the Drug Crisis and Beyond” workshop for parents. Margaret Watt, MPH, MA, prevention director at Positive Directions - The Center for Prevention & Counseling, will facilitate the discussion which will include the following topics.

• Understanding signs of drug use
• Effective communication strategies with youth on drugs
• Prevention and intervention strategies for teachers
• Teaching youth drug refusal skills Helping youth cope effectively with stress and emotions
• Marijuana’s influence on opioid abuse and much more

The same program will be hosted in Spanish on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Family Center.

“Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience”

Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Wall Street Theatre, 71 Wall St. in Norwalk

Norwalk Education Foundation and Norwalk Public Schools present a screening of “Screenagers Next Chapter” by filmmaker and physician Dr. Delaney Ruston, who takes the conversation around screens and teens to the next level. A panel discussion will follow the film’s presentation.

The film examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety, and depression in our digital age.

Family Workshop: Introduction to CT SEDS for Families

Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5 to 6 p.m.

NPS Family Center, 1 Park St. in Norwalk

Bridget Adams, executive director of specialized learning for Norwalk Public Schools, and Dierdre McKinnon, education administrator of specialized learning for Norwalk Public Schools, will provide an introduction and overview of the transition to the new IEP format. A crosswalk between the old and new systems will occur.

Celebration of Sound Marching Band Competition

Saturday, Sept. 17 at 5:50 p.m.

BMHS – Jack Casgrande Field, 300 Highland Ave. in Norwalk

Brien McMahon High School Band Program will host its annual Celebration of Sound Marching Band Competition on at Jack Casagrande Field. The marching band competition will feature 12 local high school marching bands. Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Children ages 5 and under get in free.

Come join the BMHS Band community for a fun night of music! The concession stand will be open. Spirit Wear, Candy Grams and raffles will also be available. All proceeds support the BMHS Band program.

Family Workshop: Financial Literacy, Session 1 - Budget and Savings

Thursday, Sept. 29 at 6 to 7 p.m. (Virtual session in Haitian-Creole)

Eduardo Cabrera, VP Community Manager for Chase Bank, will provide information on what to consider when making financial goals and how to accomplish them.

"Screenagers Next Chapter: Descubriendo habilidades para la resiliencia al estrés"

Miércoles, 14 sept. a las 6:30 p.m.

La Fundación de Educación de Norwalk y las Escuelas Públicas de Norwalk presentan la proyección de "Screenagers Next Chapter" de la cineasta y médica Dra. Bridget Adams, director ejecutivo de aprendizaje especializado para las Escuelas Públicas de Norwalk, y Dierdre McKinnon, administrador de educación de aprendizaje especializado para NPS, proporcionará una introducción y visión general de la transición al nuevo formato de IEP. Celebración del Concurso de bandas sonoras de marcha

El Programa de Bandas de Brien McMahon High School realizará su celebración anual del Concurso de bandas sonoras en Jack Casagrande Field. El concurso de bandas de marcha contará con 12 bandas de marcha de escuelas secundarias locales. El precio de la entrada es de $12 para los adultos y $7 para los estudiantes y las personas mayores. Los niños menores de 5 años ingresan gratis.

El puesto de concesión estará abierto. Habrá ropa de espíritu, dulces y rifas. Todo lo recaudado es para apoyar el programa de Bandas de BMHS.

Jueves, 29 de septiembre de 6 a 7 p.m. (sesión virtual en criollo-haitiano)
