NPS & NFT Reach Tentative Contract Agreement

Norwalk Public Schools and Norwalk Federation of Teachers Reach Tentative Collective Bargaining Agreement

Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Federation of Teachers are proud to announce that they have signed a tentative agreement for a collective bargaining agreement for teachers to take effect on Sept. 1, 2023.

“We are excited to reach this agreement with the Norwalk Federation of Teachers which is in the best interest of our educators, our students and our community,” said Dr. Alexandra Estrella, Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools. “Our educators have worked tremendously hard, especially over the last two years as they navigated remote, hybrid and in-person learning to keep our students engaged and succeeding in their academic careers.”

NFT will present the details of the agreement to its members for ratification in September.

“This is a great outcome for Norwalk," said Mary Yordon, president of the Norwalk Federation of Teachers. "We believe the salary and benefits agreements promote the best interests of our school communities, by making the best use of precious tax dollars to attract and retain quality certified staff.”

Following the ratification by NFT members, the Norwalk Board of Education will consider the agreement for final approval.

“This agreement is a testament to the shared commitment by Norwalk Public Schools and the Norwalk Federation of Teachers to work collaboratively in the best interests of our students,” said Colin Hosten, chairman of the Norwalk BOE.

“Collective bargaining succeeds when parties focus on common goals, and I thank NFT President Mary Yordon and her team for negotiating in good faith. Kudos, as well, to Superintendent Dr. Estrella and her negotiating team, in particular HR Director Lisette Colon and our Labor Relations Attorney Barbara Namani, for working with our partners at Shipman and Goodwin to produce a favorable agreement for all. Along with my colleague Godfrey Azima, Chair of the Personnel and Human Relations Committee, I am proud and grateful to have been part of this important process.”

The current NFT contract expires on Aug. 31, 2023.
