Wolfpit Hero’s Quick Response Saves Choking Child

The Board of Education spotlights Wolfpit Integrated Arts School Custodian Mr. Selvin Maldonado, who acted quickly to save the life of a student who was choking.

Mr. Maldonado has been a custodian at Wolfpit for the last two years. Known as "Mr. Fix It,” Selvin inspires those around him with a greeting and warm smile. He is always ready to lend a hand, shows patience, and takes pride in his work in every way, no matter how large or how small the task. When it snows or is icy, Selvin is up and ready at 4am, making sure all of walkways, steps and pathways are safe for students and staff. When classrooms needed to be prepared for social distancing due to Covid, Selvin was there ensuring that students had a safe environment in which to learn. A dedicated member of the Wolfpit team, Selvin is always prepared to help, which is exactly what he did on a seemingly average day in the lunchroom.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of the cafeteria, Selvin noticed that a child appeared to be having difficulty breathing due to choking. He sprung into action performing the Heimlich Maneuver, and delivered the student to the nurse's care within moments. As we all know, during these incidents every second counts.  Even in this high stress moment, Selvin was able to rely on his first-aid training and respond immediately.

The Wolfpit community and the Norwalk Board of Education are thankful to Mr. Maldonado’s attention to detail, quick thinking and caring nature.  We would like to honor and recognize him for his courage and his swift response, which saved the precious life of a child. We are very lucky to have Selvin as part of the NPS team!
